This week, we had Kirsten Pierce come in as a guest speaker. She specializes in outdoor education, and talked to us about ways we can integrate tech into outdoor learning in meaningful ways. She gave us a huge list of resources and apps that can be used for educational purposes.
Resources:
- LeafSnap Plant Identification
- iNaturalist
- Merlin
- CornellLab
- Moon Phases and Lunas Calendar
- Seek
- Google Maps
- Camera
- Google Earth
- SkyView
- Book Creators
- ChatterPix
- Webcams of nature reserves
I decided to look into LeafSnap Plant Identification. I wanted to see how accurate, easy, and kid friendly it was. I went across the street from where I live into Fern Street Park. Below is a video of me using it for the first time and how easy it was. You could look at flowers, leaves and even bark. It gave a couple of options on what the plant may be. As I was leaving, I saw a sign that actually talks bout the plants in the park, and sure enough, they were what the app said!
