For this week, we watched the film Most Likely to Succeed (2015). This film covers a High school in San Diego called High Tech High. The school uses lots of different tools and technologies to approach learning is a more hands on way. There isn’t criteria for the teachers to follow, and no specific classes for the students. The structure of the classes is very cross curricular, where they are covering multiple subjects with one project. When interviewing parentss, the common worry was about whether or not their child would have an education that would allow them to get into Universities. The students do end up learning these common skills, but have a more meaningful learning experience. I loved the story of a grade 9 girl who started off really shy, but then showed interest in directing the play. When the show was about to be preformed, she gave her fellow classmates an amazing and touching pep-talk, and by the end had a whole new confidence to her. It was amazing to see what these students do without too many guidelines from the teachers. A teacher mentioned that it is sometimes hard to watch someone make the same mistake over and over, but then when they solve it, it is much more meaningful and satisfactory. I think that certain elements from High Tech High would be great to implement into most high schools, even if it is just a more broad approach to learning.
